The Inuit Art of Cape Dorset: Drawing and Sculpture from the Canadian Arctic

The West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative is pleased to present this virtual exhibition of drawings and sculpture in partnership with the Embassy of Canada in Poland and Art Warsaw, on the occasion of the 2020 Warsaw Gallery Weekend. These recent works represent a cross-section of Inuit art practices currently emerging from Kinngait (Cape Dorset) located in Canada’s Arctic region. This community of artists has, for more than 60 years, been on the forefront of Inuit creative expression and has defined the genre internationally. Included in this selection are eight drawings by Qavavau Manumie, which were exhibited earlier this year at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw as part The Penumbral Age. Art in the Time of Planetary Change. Curated by Sebastian Cichocki and Jagna Lewandowska, this was the first presentation of Manumie’s work in Poland and the first time an Inuit artist was presented by the museum. The other artists in this virtual exhibition include Saimaiyu Akesuk, Shuvinai Ashoona, Johnny Pootoogook, Pitseolak Qimirpik, Ooloosie Saila, Pudloo Samayualie and Ningiukulu Teevee. This is a historic moment since it is the first opportunity for these artists to showcase their work for a Polish audience.

Sztuka inuicka z Cape Dorset: rysunek i rzeźba z kanadyjskiej Arktyki

West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative ma przyjemność zaprezentować wirtualną wystawę rysunków i rzeźb artystów inuickich z okazji Warsaw Gallery Weekend 2020. Te najnowsze prace stanowią przekrój praktyk artystycznych twórców ze studia Kinngait (Cape Dorset) położonym w kanadyjskim regionie arktycznym. Ta unikalna społeczność artystów od ponad 60 lat określa pozycję sztuki inuickiej na arenie międzynarodowej. W prezentowanej selekcji prac znalajduje się osiem rysunków Qavavau Manumie, które były prezentowane na początku tego roku w Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Warszawie w ramach wystawy Wiek Półcienia. Sztuka w czasach planetarnej zmiany. (kuratorzy: Sebastian Cichocki i Jagna Lewandowska). Była to pierwsza prezentacja twórczości Manumiego w Polsce i pierwsza prezentacja artysty inuickiego w muzeum sztuki nowoczesnej.
